Whether you are coming for hemorrhoids, anal fissure, external swelling, bleeding, or another anorectal concern, knowing what to expect can make the visit easier.
At AC Hemorrhoids & Anorectal Centre, your appointment is focused on identifying the cause of your symptoms, discussing treatment options, and moving toward treatment when appropriate.
Complete the intake form before your appointment, or arrive a few minutes early to complete the paperwork. Bring your medication list, relevant medical records, previous reports, and any photos that may help explain prolapse or other symptoms. If you take blood thinners or have significant medical conditions, let the clinic know in advance so we can review whether any additional preparation is needed.
Before your assessment, try to have a bowel movement and empty your bladder to make the examination more comfortable. No colonoscopy-style bowel preparation or extensive bowel cleansing is required. If you have specific concerns about constipation, bleeding, pain, or preparation, please contact the clinic before your visit so our team can guide you.

Your provider will review your symptoms, bowel habits, medical history, previous treatment, and current concerns. The assessment may include an external examination, digital rectal examination, and anoscopy when appropriate. After the examination, your provider will explain the diagnosis and discuss treatment options based on your symptoms, anatomy, clinical findings, and previous treatment history.
After your assessment, you will receive an estimated treatment fee based on your recommended treatment plan. Fees vary depending on the type and extent of treatment and any follow-up care required. Our clinic coordinator can also help you review payment plan options, possible extended health insurance reimbursement, and Health Spending Account use where applicable.

If a procedure is recommended and you decide to proceed, our team will help schedule your treatment and explain the expected preparation, recovery time, and follow-up plan. For out-of-town patients, travel timing, length of stay, and accommodation planning can also be discussed in advance so your treatment visit can be coordinated as smoothly as possible.
Preparation varies depending on the type of procedure. Our pre- and post-procedure nursing care team will review your instructions thoroughly and answer any questions or concerns before treatment. This may include guidance on diet, bowel preparation, medications, time off work, activity restrictions, transportation, and what to expect during the early recovery period.
On the day of your procedure, our team will complete the required pre-procedure checks and answer any final questions. During treatment, your provider will explain what is happening and monitor your comfort. Afterward, you will be observed during the immediate recovery period and given clear instructions about pain control, wound care, bowel movements, activity, and follow-up.
Follow-up care depends on the procedure and your stage of healing. It may include wound assessment, dressing changes, pain and bowel-management review, medication guidance, and adjustment of your recovery plan. Our multidisciplinary clinical team works together to support healing, monitor progress, and address questions or concerns as you recover.
Once healing is progressing appropriately, a final recheck may be arranged to review your treatment result, symptoms, wound healing, and whether any additional care is required. Patients who complete treatment may also return for a complimentary one-year assessment to review recurrence, bowel habits, and overall anorectal health.
